MariahCareyboobs: Retro Week salute to sultry Debra Paget

Because I haven't finished with the research for the big Heather Thomas post I thought about doing another post for RETRO WEEK that is not so work intensive because it's a rather short one.

But I couldn't do a RETRO WEEK without mentioning one of the hottest ladies to ignite the imagination of my adolescent hormone driven brain. I'm talking about Debra Paget.

Now, you probably don't know who Debra Paget is because you never heard of her. I have to confess that up until recently I also didn't know her name. She starred in a lot of movies but she never was one of the big stars.

The reason why I just had to include her is that she starred in two movies made by german director Fritz Lang DER TIGER VON ESCHNAPUR and DAS INDISCHE GRABMAL. In America they are of course known under the title THE TIGER OF ESCHNAPUR and THE INDIAN TOMB or as JOURNEY TO THE LOST CITY. Although I have to say that I don't like the translation of " Grabmal " with " tomb " since a tomb is normally just a burial place or a family crypt whereas a Grabmal is much more ornamental and of a more spiritual kind. But let's not mince words.

Both movies are practically one movie but they were supposed to be serialized showing the second a few weeks after the first. The story is pretty simple : boy comes to India, falls in love with girl of the guy he's supposed to work for who is a bigwig, bigwig tries to kill him, he escapes with the girl, hijinks follow but it all ends well. Your typical indian tourist experience.

This is not one of Fritz Lang's best films and the only reason why I still remember it is Debra Paget. She plays Seetha, the girl the main character Harald Berger ( Paul Hubschmied ) falls for and in the second movie she has to submit to a strange kind of judgement of the gods. The deal is pretty simple : since she's a priestess she has to prove to Chandra ( he's the bad guy ) that's she's still a virgin and didn't do the hanky panky with Harald by facing a wild cobra. Holey Moley, as a teenager I was not so sure how the whole deal with the snake and the dance was supposed to prove anything. But now it's clear to me : only a true virgin can perform a dance that's so hot even the snake get's stiff. And if it's stiff it can't bite her.

Now in the scene Seetha hesitates in the last moment but before the cobra bites her Chandra kills the snake. He then proclaims that the gods have spoken and that he's going to marry Seetha. What I think is that Chandra just realized that he doesn't care if she's innocent or not. She's hot and should end up in his bedroom instead of rotting away in a tomb killed by a snake bite. Good thinking.

So this is my RETRO WEEK salute to Debra who may not have been the biggest star but after the release of THE INDIAN TOMB the fan mail for Debra Paget received at 20th Century-Fox was topped only by that for Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable. For me she will always be sexy Seetha.
